14 November 2019

Top managers from Russian and foreign energy industry majors unite to help build a better understanding of corporate carbon management systems at the Carbon Management workshop organized by Rosneft last week.

Rosneft welcomed senior representatives of foreign companies including President of BP Russia, David Campbell, President of Equinor Russia, Elisabeth Birkeland Kvalheim, joined by a number of Vice Presidents and top managers from Rosneft Oil Company.

The objective of the workshop was to share strategic initiatives, which help to significantly lower the GHG emissions. Participants took advantage of discussing innovative technologies in this area and agreed on establishing a mechanism of continuous experience sharing.

In his address to the participants CEO of Rosneft Oil Company Igor Sechin noted that “the industry is facing a challenge of overcoming the energy inequality, which does not mean we should stop using oil and gas, rather, it means a balanced development of traditional and renewable energy sectors, greener oil and gas business and use of energy efficient technologies”.

In its projects Rosneft ensures better access to environmentally friendly energy resources and reduces GHG emissions. Environmental protection is an integral part of Rosneft-2022 Strategy. Our company works hard to take lead in mitigating the environmental impact and making its operations environmentally friendly, one of the objectives of the company is to join the 1st quartile of the world oil and gas companies in per unit GHG emissions. To this end, Rosneft improves APG utilization levels and consistently modifies the output mix to produce more eco-friendly fuels.

Rosneft’s total green investment over the last five years exceeded 240 billion rubles (over 4 billion USD). Over the same period, Rosneft invested more than 125 billion rubles (over 2 billion USD) in APG utilization technologies.

In its Strategy approved by the Board of Directors in December 2018, the Company stated its commitment to 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, having identified 5 priority goals one of which is to combat climate change.

In June 2019, Rosneft joined the initiative of leading international oil and gas companies to reduce methane emissions by signing up to Methane Guiding Principles aimed at advancement of strong performance across gas value chains, advocating sound policies and regulations on methane emissions.

Carbon Management subcommittee has been set up as part of the HSE Committee with the objective to help achieve the Company’s strategic objectives in climate change area.
